Flammkuchen: A Delightful German-French Culinary Fusion

Flammkuchen, also known as "Tarte Flambee," is a delectable dish originating from the Alsace region, straddling the border between Germany and France. This savory treat is often likened to pizza but boasts a thinner, crispier crust and a distinctive flavor profile.

The traditional Flammkuchen is topped with crème fraiche, thinly sliced onions, and lardons (small bacon pieces). The simplicity of its ingredients allows for a delightful harmony of flavors, making it a beloved dish in both German and French cuisines.

Flammkuchen Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 250g (2 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 125ml (1/2 cup) water
  • 200g (7 oz) crème fraiche or sour cream
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 150g (5 oz) lardons or bacon, diced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh chives or thyme for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, olive oil, and water until a smooth dough forms. Knead for a few minutes, then cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 250°C (480°F) and place a baking sheet inside to heat.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: Divide the dough into two portions. Roll each portion out on a floured surface into a very thin, rectangular shape.
  3. Add Toppings: Spread a thin layer of crème fraiche over each dough base. Distribute the thinly sliced onions and lardons evenly over the top. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Bake: Carefully transfer the Flammkuchen onto the preheated baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are crispy and golden brown.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with fresh chives or thyme if desired. Slice and serve immediately.

Enjoy your homemade Flammkuchen as a delicious appetizer, snack, or main course, paired perfectly with a glass of white wine or a cold beer.
